Aluminium (aluminum or aluminum in American as well as Canadian English) is a chemical element that has the symbol Al and the atomic code 13. It has a density that is lower than that of the other metals, at approximately 1/3 of that of steel. It has a great affinity towards oxygen, and forms a protective layer of oxide on the surface when exposed to air. Aluminium visually resembles silver, both in color and in its capacity of reflecting light. The soft metal is non-magnetic and ductile. It has one stable isotope 27Al; this isotope extremely common, which makes aluminium the 12th most prevalent substance in the Universe. Radioactivity from 26Al is utilized in radiodating.

Chemically, the element of aluminium is a post-transitional metallic element within the boron group; as is normal for the group, aluminium produces compounds most often in the +3 state of oxidation. The cation of aluminium Al3+ is tiny and extremely charged. As therefore, it is polarizing and the bonds it forms tend towards covalency. The strong affinity with oxygen leads to aluminium’s common relationship with oxygen in the form of oxides; for this reason it is present in the Earth most often in rocks within the crust, where it is the third-highest concentration element after oxygen and silicon and silicon, but not in the mantle, and virtually never in the form of a free metal.
